Jared, his father Joe and friend Scott wanted to do a little deep sea fishing while in town from Kentucky. My boat was getting serviced so a quick phone call to another Sea Hunt owner (Marshal Buscemi) and we were locked in for 5:30 am. A short weather delay set us back a bit but none the less, we hit the water at around 6:45 AM. Marshal already had his boat stocked to the brim with gear and ice so after a quick stop to the pin-fish traps, we headed South. First stop was in about 80 foot of water. Marshal gave the go ahead as he maneuvered the boat over the wreck below and everyone dropped down. Seconds later there were 4 fish boatside! Snapper of course but a nice start to what would turn out to be a really successful day (by the way, these snapper were HUGE - check out the pictures in the trophy room).
After the first stop, we worked our way South, tacking from one spot to the next and before we knew it, we had 6 Scamp Grouper in the box and were kissing 300' of water. It was at this depth, that Joe locked into a nice surprise. We were all bottom fishing when all of a sudden I hear drag ripping off of Joe's reel (not very common when bottom fishing with 6/0 reel locked down to the max). My first thought was "shark" but after several minutes of Joe fighting, I knew this was something different. Everyone rushed over to see what was on the other end.Several moments later and little help from his comrades, and Joe had himself a BEAUTIFUL Blackfin Tuna! Nice job! We mixed it up a bit throughout the day; switching from cut bait to squid and live pin-fish. All in all, we caught over 40 fish. Here is the tally: - Blackfin Tuna -1
- Scamp Grouper - 10 (6 keepers)
- Gag Grouper 1
- Black Grouper 2 (1 keeper)
- White Snapper 5
- Vermilion Snapper 1
- Lane Snapper 1
- Red Snapper 20+
- Sharks - 2
* Special thanks to Trevor for providing 1st mate service during the entire 11 hour trip!

Lately, I have been working the Choctawhatchee Bay in search of Speckled Trout and Red Fish. On days that I have not had charters, Dave Lauterbach (1st mate) and I have not wasted a minute trying new areas to fish. My goal is to maximize the customer's time on the water so that they go home wanting more and have memories to last a lifetime; that is what it is all about - that is when you truly become "hooked!" Lately, we have spent hours combing the grass beds and researching the tidal curren...

Today I did a double charter. Mr. Antony called me up Sunday and said he had 8 eager fishermen wanting to try their luck in the Gulf of Mexico - i'm all in!
We decided to split up the crew into two separate trips (one leaving at 5am and one leaving at 1pm). My alarm sounded at 3:45 the next morning and I began my usual prep for a day on the water - water, rods, ice, bait, PFD's, fuel and tackle. I checked everything off and set out to meet everyone.
The first crew (Sam, Gabe, Haley, and Chri... Continue reading...

It has been quite a season so far. We have made every trip count this year and have really "filled the boat" with quality fish. As summer winds down, I am already getting excited about what is ahead. Late Summer/early Fall is undoubtedly my favorite time of year to fish. The bite is always on and you don't have to fight the summer crowds and hoards of boats in the Destin Pass. I am taking early reservations for the second week in October (9th -16th) for those who are interested in participati...

So today Gary, Valerie, Erin and Grace chartered the "Scallywag" for a day of trolling the Emerald Coast. The two youngest girls (Erin and Grace) were excited about their first saltwater fishing adventure. We came through the pass and immediately put out two lines; one on top and one further back about 3 feet under the surface. Right away there was a hit; "FISH ON" everyone yelled! Gary jumped to the back of the boat and grabbed the rod. The fish ran out and then directly toward the boat. A n...

As you all know, Snapper season is IN and let me tell you, there have been some NICE ones hauled in this year! The limited regulations have allowed the Snapper population to increase exponentially to the point where it is impossible NOT to catch one. There are plenty of live bottom spots just outside the Destin pass that hold Snapper, TriggerFish, Juvenile AJ's and a Grouper here and there. Last week we must have hauled in a total of 50 keepers. My freezer is full and all of my close friends ...

Dave and I set out for an all day, offshore fishing trip on the Sea Hunt. 5:15 came early and before we knew it , we were in the pass catching bait. Once again, beautiful thread fin herring were in the hundreds of thousands. Boats were all bunched together collecting their loot as we joined in to catch ours. We caught 40 or 50 and headed out. By the way, it was CALM as ever. We were able to run wide open the whole way out to the 14 mile location. Lots of action on top. Bait and Jacks tore up ... Continue reading...

Mike Milano (Kyagra to many) chartered my boat out for Tuesday. He showed up to the docks with a plethora of rods and reels; something for every type of fishing. One in particular caught my eye. It was a winch of a reel - older model Penn, deep crimson in color. It was spooled with what looked to be about 1,000 yards of thick braided line. Looked to be about a 9/0 and measured about 8 inches across. The rod that the reel was mounted to was brand new; still had the price tag and plastic around...

I did not have a scheduled charter today so Hadley and I decided try our luck on some new, private coordinates I received from a local captain. We didn't have to travel far before we were catching quality fish. In fact, the very first drop yielded a quality Snapper and just about every drop after that, we caught a NICE fish. For now, my sights are set on June 1st when we can actually keep the Snapper but they are still a blast to catch. Tuesday we are heading out again - this time about 14 mi... Continue reading...
