Fishing Reports Destin FL

OverCast

March 30, 2011
Man does it feel good to get out on the water. Even though it was rough and overcast, Dave, Tyler and Jacko kept their spirits high as we headed out for the day. Right away, we were catching Spanish Mackerel in the pass and near the Destin Bridge. We hooked into 5 or 6 within about a 15 minute time frame - most were small though. We switched gears a bit later and headed South to a new spot about 11 miles from shore. We knew it was rough and staying over the spot would be tough but we tried our luck anyway. We dropped down and after the first half hour only nibbles and a small grunt to show. Then, I look over and Tyler is bowed up on a fish. The fish quickly got tangled in the wreck and cut us off. Good sign though - at least they were biting. Next, I see Dave bowed up and a minute later their was a Snapper boat-side. What a great feeling it was to finally see a Red Snapper after the long winter season. I think we all breathed a sigh of relief after we saw it. It was getting late so we headed near the sandbar to try for mackerel again. We trolled for a while with little results until finally Jacko hauled in a NICE Spanish Mackerel. It was a great time - everybody caught fish and even though things were slow, it is always nice just to get out and wet a line. Totals for the day:

(1) Red Snapper
(2) Small Grouper
(8) Spanish Mackerel (3 keepers)
(1) Grunt

Blessed

March 23, 2011
My long-time dream, ever since I was a little boy, was to buy a big boat and make a living catching fish and living on the beach. I had always envisioned an "Island" lifestyle, where I live off the land and charge people to fish; developing strong relationships with the locals and living the simple life. I quickly realized after college that life was a little more complex than I had once thought but I never gave up on my dream and today I am one step closer... Today I finalized the purchase o...

Finally...

March 10, 2011
After the LONG winter season in Florida it is finally the time we have all been waiting for; fishing season. April will be here before we know it and you know what that means - COBIA. Lings will start to patrol the beaches soon and will kick off the 2011 fishing season. With the unseasonably warm water this year, expect the Cobia to show up a little early. Spanish, Kings and Mahi will follow suit and before you know it we will be in the midst of it all. Remember, Gulf-Angler Charters now has ...

Reel Time

December 7, 2010

It is that time of year again when many hours are devoted to delicate reel repairs and tedious preperations for the next summer fishing season. It is crucial that the the right amount of care goes into the preventative maintance of your reels (especially reels that are used in salt water). In order to get the most out of your fishing reels, you have to consistantly lubricate the bearings and gears and flush out the salt residue. Salt water build up will seize up a reel in a few days time; eve...

Whaler

October 30, 2010

I know it has been some time since my last post. I have been extremely busy with my real job and have had limited time to fish. We did, however, get a solid week of fishing in during the beginning of October. This was my firts year to enter the Destin Fishing Rodeo (a month long tournament that lasts all October). Let me tell you that it has been a BLAST! It all started with the Captains meeting on the last day in Sept. The rodeo officials really take care of their local captains. We listened...

Over Easy!

September 4, 2010
Dave Lauterbauch, Mike Howe and myself decided to brave the rough surf for another day of cut throat saltwater fishing from our Hobie kayaks. We won't go into detail but lets just say my two fishing buddies need some more practice on launching and entering the surf! Anyway, it was an awesome day for fishing! We racked up on Snapper and Grouper off the bottom and even caught a couple nice Kings and a small shark at about 60 foot of water! With the Destin fishing rodeo on the horizon, we needed...

August 21, 2010 Kayak Fishing

August 22, 2010

Jared Laurick and I launched our kayaks at 2:00 today. Once again the unpredictable summer weather played a big role in todays outcome. We began by trolling aroung a bit to get a feel for what may be hungry. After about an hour we had our first hit but he quickly snapped my 50lb. braid. I retied and we headed to about 60 foot of water. Just as we reach the targeted depth, someting HUGE hit my line. I can honestly say I have never seen my line go out so fast! I was holding my fishing rod with ...

August 10th, 2010

August 11, 2010
Graham Rodgers and I hit the water at 3:00 this afternoon! This was Graham's first saltwater fishing trip so I was excited to show him what it is all about! We went to my new favorite spot, 2 miles offshore, and dropped lines. Snapper everywhere! We caught several snapper and got bit off by some sharks on the bottom. The wind picked up so we switched gears and trolled the tide line. I really wanted Graham to hook into something while trolling so that he could see how much fun it is to fight q...

Couldn't Land Him

August 9, 2010
Dave and I put in at 12:30 yesterday afternoon. With storms all around us we knew our trip may be short lived so we started fishing as soon as we hit the sandbar. We made our way out to the two mile marker and dropped a couple lines to the bottom. Immediately we were hauling up snapper. The snapper were so thick down there, they were taking our bait on the way down almost everytime. Since snapper season is out, we switched gears and started trolling for Kings. Dave had never caught a nice Kin...

Fishing not Catching

August 5, 2010

One of the most anticipated trips of the summer had me pumped up as I finished tying my last live bait rig the night before our kayak fishing excursion. All of the ingredients for a successful day on the water were there: calm seas, warm water,a strong fishing forecast and 3 guys who were determined to catch a fish from a kayak. Scott, Jason and Justin met up at 7:30am. We went over the basics and headed out. Scott and his son, Justin, trolled a duster rig from the tandem (thanks to Dave Laud...
